GM wheat can only be grown with the approval of the Gene Technology Regulator (the Regulator), who carries out a science-based risk assessment before the crop is approved for release.

The OGTR carried out scientific assessments of GM wheat and the Regulator has issued 25 licences for GM wheat since 2005. GM wheat is not grown commercially in Australia, and is not licenced for commercial release.
